Colombo has been a flourishing sea port for centuries even before when ancient seafarers traded in pearls, precious stones, elephants, peacocks, cinnamon and other spices. Today Sri Lanka's commercial capital is a fascinating blend of the east and the west, the past and present and the old & new.
The name "Colombo", introduced by the Portuguese in 1505, is believed to be a derivative from the classical Sinhalese name 'Kolon thota, meaning "Port on the river Kelani" and also been suggested that the name may have been derived from the Sinhalese name Kola-amba-thota which means "Harbor with leafy mango trees"
Due to its large harbor and its strategic location along the east-west sea trading routes, the city of Colombo was known to ancient traders from about 2,000 years ago. It was made the capital of the island when Sri Lanka ceded to the British Empire in 1815, and its status as the capital was retained when the nation gained independence in 1948. In 1978, when administrative functions were moved to Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte, Colombo was designated as the commercial capital of Sri Lanka.
After the three decade long war and the dawn of permanent peace, today Colombo is a fast transforming in to a well-planned garden city. Many new mega developments will soon add excitement and grandeur to Colombo's skyline. The sensitive restoration of many historical buildings in the city and entwinement of interesting public and recreational spaces will soon infuse life and colour to the premier city of a destination that will be soon transformed to be the Wonder of Asia.
